Mindful Interior Design

As a mental health therapist I have been lucky enough to meet and study people for the majority of my career. I primarily treat anxiety and depression but along with that always comes a vast array of complex issues related to life like trauma, grief, life transitions, shame, guilt, etc. One thing I know for absolute certainty is our environment impacts our mood, relationships, and confidence. What we put in our spaces MATTERS. This is where mindful interior design comes in.

Mindful interior design is the idea that you consciously and purposefully design your space to reflect your personal values. Values are things that you find important in your life.

Here are 3 questions to ponder when mindfully designing your room:

1.     What do I want to convey in my space (think about the mood you want to project i.e. light, peaceful, grounded, romantic, bold)?

2.     Do the items/colors/materials reflect the mood I am going for in my room?

3.      Sit in the room you are working on and ask yourself how it makes you feel in this moment? Do you want your mood to change or do you like the direction it is going?

Here are 4 key components to mindful design:

1.     Mindful design is creating a space that reflects the mood you want to convey when you enter into the room.

2.     The mood of a space is influenced by everything in the room. Think about items, texture, color, lighting, shapes, and layout.

3.     In the psychology world mindfulness is all about present moment awareness. In the design world, mindfulness is about being intentional with every choice you make when creating a space.

4.     Mindful design is about how your home enables relaxed downtime.
